During the 128th Council Meeting of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), held in San José, Costa Rica, Dr. Renae Ferguson-Bufford, Executive Director of the Bahamas Bureau of Standards and Quality (BBSQ), joined fellow Council members in shaping the future direction of international standardization.
Held from 2–5 June 2025, the quarterly meeting convened leaders of National Standards Bodies from around the world to reflect on ISO’s strategic agenda 2030 and explore how standards must evolve to address today’s most pressing global challenges. Discussions centered on strengthening ISO’s approach to sustainability and climate action, ensuring safe and equitable digital transformation (including AI integration), and deepening international cooperation for greater impact.
As an elected member of the ISO Council and Vice Chair of DEVCO, Dr. Ferguson-Bufford continues to elevate The Bahamas’ voice in high-level decision-making—ensuring that the needs of developing countries and small island states are recognized in the international standards community. Dr. Ferguson-Bufford contributed to dialogue aimed at ensuring that global standardization remains inclusive, forward-thinking, and grounded in measurable outcomes.
The ISO Council continues to serve as a beacon of international cooperation, where trust, innovation, and equity are central to its mission. Dr. Ferguson-Bufford continues to commend the Council’s collaborative spirit and reaffirmed The Bahamas’ support for ISO’s role in advancing global resilience and development through standards – making lives easier, safer and better.
BBSQ extends its sincere appreciation to ISO President Sung Hwan Cho, Secretary-General Mr. Sergio Mujica, and the ISO Central Secretariat for their vision and stewardship. The next Council Meeting is set to take place in Kigali, Rwanda in October 2025.
