BBSQ Explores Intelligent Manufacturing Standards in China

Ms. Lakell Spencer, Standards Officer and Head of Department at the Bahamas Bureau of Standards and Quality (BBSQ), recently represented The Bahamas at the Seminar on Standardization Cooperation in Intelligent Equipment Manufacturing for Developing Countries. The training took place from August 26 – September 8, 2025 in Beijing, China, with visits to Shanghai and Changchun.

Organized by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Mechanization Sciences Group Co., Ltd. (CAAMS) and sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China, the seminar brought together representatives from 10 developing countries — including The Bahamas, Bangladesh, Egypt, The Gambia, Iraq, Indonesia, Kenya, Namibia, Uzbekistan, and the Solomon Islands. In total, 34 participants engaged in lectures, site visits, and cultural exchanges that underscored how standardization is shaping the future of intelligent manufacturing worldwide.

From Knowledge to Practice

The programme was designed to blend theory with practical experience. Classroom sessions explored areas such as functional safety technology, digital empowerment in equipment manufacturing, and the strategic direction of international standards. These were complemented by field visits to universities, laboratories, and manufacturing facilities in Beijing, Shanghai, and Changchun.

Highlights included a visit to Jilin University Laboratory, where participants saw cutting-edge research in robotics and smart equipment testing platforms, and tours of companies applying big data standardization to operations and intelligent maintenance systems. Together, these experiences painted a clear picture of how China links standards, technology, and innovation to create globally competitive industries.

Relevance for The Bahamas

For The Bahamas, the lessons drawn from the seminar point to exciting possibilities. Intelligent equipment manufacturing guided by strong standards can play a transformative role in sectors such as agriculture, marine and maritime industries, and pharmaceutical and medical equipment. By aligning with international best practices on safety, interoperability, energy efficiency, and quality, BBSQ can help prepare Bahamian industries to innovate, compete, and grow in the global market.

Strengthening International Cooperation

Equally valuable was the spirit of collaboration fostered among the participants. With delegates from across Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean, the seminar created a platform for mutual exchange and networking. The relationships built during this programme hold the potential for continued cooperation and knowledge sharing long after the closing ceremony.

BBSQ’s involvement underscores The Bahamas’ commitment to staying at the forefront of global discussions on intelligent manufacturing and to ensuring that local industries benefit from the standards that drive innovation and sustainable development.
