BBSQ Hosts COPANT Week 2026

The Bahamas Bureau of Standards and Quality (BBSQ) proudly hosted COPANT Week 2026 from April 27–30, welcoming regional and international delegates to Nassau for a week of dialogue, collaboration, and cultural exchange centered on the theme “Resilience, Sustainability, Quality – Together.”

As the National Standards Body of The Bahamas, BBSQ brought together leaders in standardization, quality infrastructure, and development to highlight the critical role of standards in addressing global challenges and strengthening regional cooperation across the Americas.


Welcome Reception

The week officially began on Monday evening with a vibrant Welcome Reception, where delegates experienced the warmth and culture of The Bahamas.

The evening featured lively entertainment by MC Chigozie and the Royal Bahamas Defence Force Band, creating an engaging and memorable atmosphere. Delegates enjoyed authentic Bahamian cuisine, networking, and a relaxed environment that fostered meaningful connections ahead of the week’s sessions.

Opening Ceremony

The week formally commenced on Tuesday with the Opening Ceremony and General Assembly, moderated by Mr. Edison Sumner, and featuring a special musical selection by Keith Simms.

The ceremony set the tone for a week of high-level engagement and meaningful collaboration, bringing together key stakeholders from across the region and beyond. BBSQ Executive Director Dr. Renae Ferguson Bufford brought the Keynote Address, along with remarks from COPANT President Mr. Mauricio Céspedes and COPANT Executive Secretary  Kory Eguino.

A key highlight was the Panel of International Organizations, featuring global leaders from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). Discussions explored how international standards are advancing resilience, sustainability, and quality, and how these efforts can translate into tangible benefits for the Americas region .

Additionally, the QICA Panel (Quality Infrastructure Council of the Americas) emphasized the importance of strengthening quality infrastructure—standardization, metrology, and accreditation—as essential drivers of trade, innovation, and trust .

The day also featured a Regional Organizations and Cooperation Panel, which focused on advancing practical and strategic collaboration across regions. Panelists from organizations including PTB, CROSQ, PASC, CEN/CENELEC, and CANENA engaged in a dynamic discussion centered on moving beyond dialogue to concrete, impact-driven cooperation in the Americas.

ANSI/BBSQ Workshop

On Wednesday, the ANSI/BBSQ Workshop titled
“Building a Resilient Future for All: The Role of Standards and Partnerships for Climate Action”
brought together experts from across the public and private sectors.

The workshop featured two dynamic panels:

  • Build Back Better — focusing on resilient and sustainable buildings and community preparedness

  • Cross-Border and International Harmonization — emphasizing the importance of aligning standards for regional resilience and climate action

Panelists included representatives from ASTM International, the International Code Council (ICC), UL Standards & Engagement, the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), and the CARICOM Regional Organisation for Standards and Quality (CROSQ), alongside regional and national experts. Notably, contributions from Mr. Leonard Sands Senior Project Manager of Albany Resort Development, Southwest New Providence, and Mr. Charles Hamilton of the Office of the Prime Minister grounded the discussions in local experience, particularly in relation to hurricane resilience, climate reporting, and mobilizing climate finance

Discussions highlighted practical approaches to strengthening resilience, improving compliance frameworks, and leveraging standards to support climate action and sustainable development.

Celebrating Bahamian Culture

Throughout the week, delegates were immersed in Bahamian culture through a curated exhibition experience featuring local artisans and entrepreneurs:

These exhibitors brought a unique and authentic cultural dimension to COPANT Week, offering delegates a meaningful connection to The Bahamas beyond the meeting rooms.

Closing Dinner & Cultural Experience

 
 

 Wednesday evening concluded with an authentic Bahamian  dinner, where delegates enjoyed local cuisine, networking, and entertainment in a relaxed setting.

The highlight of the evening was a vibrant Junkanoo rush-out, delivering an unforgettable cultural experience and leaving delegates with a lasting impression of The Bahamas’ rich heritage and energy.
